Without digging into much details onto the internet, I'm going to write out which Chinese series I watched where it has a sad ending. Anyone is welcome to continue what they seen that would qualified as a sad ending. I will just summarize why it's a sad ending.

Hunnie: Glad to see some viewers enjoying sad ending, the director hates having happy ending all the time.

Phon88 commented: Now that I am thinking about it, I think this is the only movie (Romance of the White Hair Maiden) that I watch that had a sad ending. Name a few movies that had a sad ending? I am sure you won't be able to come up with much.

I'm sure there's many more sad ending series, but these are the ones I can come up with, as I write this thread. I know all the White Hair Maiden version and Snake Romance version are all sad ending. Now I'm going to leave the rest for everyone else. :D

The ending for Romance of the White Haired Maiden left me in tears and wanting more......

Hunnie, you watched a lot of movies. The list you provided, the only movie I watched was Holy Pearl and the main reason was because of the main girl. Gilliam Chung is fine as hell. I am okay with the ending with that movie because it was nothing like the love in White Hair Maiden with all the betrayal and pain. The only movie I can think of is White Hair Maiden. I thought I watched a lot of movies I guess not.

I watch the Holy Pearl for Gillian Chung also, wasn't into the guy lead actor though. There's going to be a new series of her soon in Khmer dubbed, but too bad you're not into watching long drama anymore. :D I already saw it in Chinese, because I'm impatient, but I'm looking forward to it in Khmer dubbed.

The Blood Stain Intrigue was sad throughout and more so at the end. If I remember correctly, only the hero's brother got a happy ending.

The Blood Stain Intrigue was sad throughout and more so at the end. If I remember correctly, only the hero's brother got a happy ending.

One of my favourites and yes Jimmy and Ng Seen Mei separate at the very end; she leaves him because he killed her father. Only Au Wai Lun have a happy ending with his gal. Actually Wong Wan Choi and Ng Kar Lei end up together surprisingly; they decide to wander the realm together so it is a hint I'm assuming because Yung Wai Mun dies (I love her character).

The Romance of the White Hair Maiden 1995 is a sad ending but he deserves it I am sorry (not the character's fault, blame the stupid scriptwriter). In the novel he accidently injures her because he was dis-illusional and going crazy. Then he accidently throws secret weapons while she is battling all the Wudang priests. But when he realizes what he's done he nearly goes mad for real and regrets it. Then her hair turns white and she leaves him.

But in the serial due to the stupid producer's arrangement he deliberately stabs her because He E Hua and her father Taoist White Stone lies to Yihang that Nichang injures her. When really, is it White Stone who stabs his own daughter and blames it on Nichang. Why do they like to create this love triangle for? In the novel He E Hua does not even LOVE or even LIKE Yihang, he's just like a brother to her because she is in love and has a happy ending with Li Shenshi. Yihang's character is made to be more stupid in the 1995 version, and he doesn't deserve her. It's a bit sad, but I don't blame the woman. To me the ending is fitting because Yihang is even more lame and stupid here. While in the novel he is pitiful.

In the novel it is different though, it is even more sad and heart breaking in the novel. When Nichang's hair turns white she goes up to Mount Heaven and slays all the bad guys. She even wears an ugly old woman mask and says it suits her white hair (it is sad whenever she brings this up). Yihang travels millions of miles bearing through the cold and winter to search for her. Actually he doesn't even know her hair turned white, when he sees the woman in the mask he recognizes the voice but he couldn't tell she was wearing a mask. This is because after her hair turned white she only went to Tie Feilong and Ke PingTing and bowed her respects to him and told PingTing to watch over foster father for her and she would leave them forever. She didn't want anyone to see her white hair.

Yihang doesn't care even if her hair turned white and he searches all over for the pancea which restores one's youth. But it blooms one every sixty years but Yihang does not give up. He even accepts a disciple (Xin Longzhi) while in the process. Even though Nichang is stubborn and refuses to accept Yihang she saves him many times from danger. Yue Mingke/Reverend Hui Ming has also tried his best to pair the two up together but The Demoness is too stubborn and won't accept Yihang back. In the next novel we find out their fate which is even more sad. Yihang passed away before the flower bloomed, but before he dies he still wanted to be near his lover. So he told his disciples to shrink his remains and place it next to Nichang's dead body. (To prevent his enemies from trying to destroy his dead body). I think Nichang dies before him, at the age of 100. They couldn't be together in life, but in death he finally got his wish, both placed in a cave on Mount Heaven.

In the novel I blame Nichang for this sad ending because she is too stubborn and Yihang is not as stupid as TVB's 1995 version. While in the TV version I blame Yihang for their breaking up as he really deserves it.

Lofty Waters Verdant Bow is very sad as well, I felt so sad for Michelle's character. But actually he is supposed to end up with Rain Lee's character. Then later on they even have a son. In the novel he loves Rain Lee's character way more (The 1984 ATV version depicted this part more accurately). Did you guys know Lofty Waters Verdant Bow takes place about 100-150 years or so after the events of White Hair Maiden? Tang Xiao Lan in that story is the leader of Mount Heaven during that time. Of course all the characters from White Hair Maiden are dead though by the time of Lofty.

Thanks LianNiChang for joining in the conversation. It's sad that one has to be stubborn and ended up living in sorrow for so long. Only if they just come to a compromise like present days and life wouldn't be so rough. Sad endings just sucks for me. But hey, I guess sad ending leave some thoughts for the viewers and readers. The ending for Lofty Waters Verdant Bow series was really sad.
